ORIGIN OF THE RED HAT SOCIETY
The Red Hat Society resulted from the giving a birthday gift. In November 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper, (Fullerton, California) presented her dear friend, Linda Murphy, with a red hat and a copy of the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph. The original intent was for Linda to hang the hat on a hook next to the framed poem, as a decorative reminder to loosen up, as she got older. The gift was a hit! Other friends of Sue Ellen expressed an interest in receiving the same gift as they reached their 50th birthdays. On April 25, 1998, dressed in purple and their red hats, the ladies went to a tea room. This was the beginning of our Red Hat Society.

ALL QUEENS ARE EQUAL
All Queens in the Red Hat Society are equal and every Queen is special to Hatquarters. We do not divide our Society into districts, regions, states or countries. We actively strive to create a global Society without borders or hierarchy. Just for fun and sisterhood, groups of Queens have formed informal "councils" for the purpose of sharing ideas and broadening friendship, but note that all members of such councils are equal. Registered Queens (Co-Queens and Vice-Queens)of the Red Hat Society are welcome to attend these gatherings. RHS Ambassadors are recognized independently because they excel at outreach for the Society. Let's all remember that there are no Chapters over other Chapters, no Queens over Queens and no Ambassadors over Queens, Chapters or Supporting Members.
